Endangered Species

On April 4, 2012 Scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), Addax( Addax nasomaculatus), and Dama Gazelle (Nanger dama) officially went on the Endangered Species Act list regulated by the Department of Interior, United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Simply said the new status directly negatively affects the game ranch industry in the United States and primarily in Texas in a monumental way.Scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), Addax( Addax nasomaculatus), and Dama Gazelle (Nanger dama)

Scimitar-horned oryx have been extinct in their native habitat for over thirty years. During that thirty year span game ranchers throughout the United States, but primarily in Texas, have through exceptional animal husbandry practices brought the species back with great success. They now number in the 1000’s in Texas and have a bright future.

Following the new regulations Serengeti Game Ranch applied for and was granted a Captive Breeders Permit and a Take Permit issued by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. These two permits authorize Serengeti Game Ranch “to take for normal husbandry practices; deliver, receive, carry, transport or ship in interstate commerce, for the purpose of enhancement of propagation, any scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah), addax (Addax nasomaculatus), or dama gazelle (Nanger dama), that is bred in captivity in the United States”. In conjunction with that authorization Serengeti Game Ranch agreed to donate 10% of any and all proceeds directly related to the “take” activities of any of the three indicated species. Serengeti Game ranch chose a project directly related to the ongoing effort to return the Scimitar-horned oryx into their original native habitat in Senegal overseen by the Exotic Wildlife Association.

Serengeti Game Ranch has an outstanding herd of Scimitar-horned oryx, Addax, and Dama Gazelle. We will, from time to time, remove animals from the herd as necessitated by proper herd animal husbandry management.
